Thomas M. Velarde is an experienced trial attorney who is sensitive to his clients' needs and strives for efficient case management. Mr. Velarde handles a wide range of family law matters, including complex divorce, custody and visitation, support, domestic violence protective orders, and has also handled cases involving Hague Convention custody issues. In addition, Mr. Velarde has experience handling cases involving sexual abuse. Mr. Velarde enjoys the courtroom and has practiced throughout Northern Virginia.
Mr. Velarde was recognized as one of The Best Lawyers in America, Virginia in the 2024 edition of The Best Lawyers in America ®. In 2015, Mr. Velarde received the Service Provider of Excellence award from the Fairfax County Domestic Violence Community for his trial work with children subjected to domestic violence. Mr. Velarde has been asked by his peers to teach Continuing Legal Education courses on the Virginia Rules of Evidence, litigation domestic violence protective orders, professionalism, and issues related to the testimony of children in court.
Mr. Velarde grew up in Northern Virginia and received his juris doctorate from George Mason University School of Law, completing a specialization track in litigation. He received his Bachelor of Arts in History and Philosophy from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Mr. Velarde is a member of the Virginia State Bar and the Fairfax Bar Association. He previously served as the Co-Chair of the Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court of Fairfax County Committee.
